Gerunds and Infinitives: Rules and Usage
In this lesson, we study gerunds and infinitives in English for 2nd Year Secondary School (Literary Stream). Knowing when to use the gerund (-ing form) or infinitive (to + verb) is essential for correct English.
What are Gerunds and Infinitives?
Gerund: The -ing form of a verb used as a noun. Example: Swimming is fun.
Infinitive: The base form of a verb preceded by “to”. Example: I want to swim.
Verbs Followed by Gerunds
Some verbs are always followed by a gerund:
- enjoy: I enjoy reading books.
- avoid: You should avoid eating too much.
- suggest: He suggested going to the cinema.
- finish: She finished writing the letter.
- mind: Do you mind opening the window?
- consider: I am considering studying abroad.
- practice: Practice speaking English daily.
Verbs Followed by Infinitives
Some verbs are always followed by an infinitive:
- want: I want to learn English.
- hope: She hopes to pass the exam.
- decide: They decided to travel to London.
- promise: He promised to help me.
- plan: We are planning to visit the museum.
- offer: She offered to drive me home.
- refuse: He refused to answer the question.
Verbs Followed by Either (with a change in meaning)
