Order of Adjectives: Rules and Examples
In this lesson, we study the order of adjectives in English for 1st Year Secondary School (Literary Stream). When using multiple adjectives before a noun, they must follow a specific order.
The Order of Adjectives
When we use two or more adjectives before a noun, they usually follow this order:

| 1 | Opinion (رأي) | nice, beautiful, ugly, wonderful |
| 2 | Size (حجم) | big, small, large, tiny |
| 3 | Age (عمر) | old, young, new, ancient |
| 4 | Shape (شكل) | round, square, flat, triangular |
| 5 | Color (لون) | red, blue, white, black |
| 6 | Origin (أصل) | Algerian, French, Chinese |
| 7 | Material (مادة) | wooden, silk, metal, plastic |
| 8 | Purpose (غرض) | sleeping (bag), cooking (oil) |
Easy Memory Trick
Remember the acronym OSASCOMP:
Opinion – Size – Age – Shape – Color – Origin – Material – Purpose
Examples
1. A beautiful big old round red Chinese wooden table.
(Opinion → Size → Age → Shape → Color → Origin → Material → Noun)
2. She bought a lovely small new blue Algerian dress.
(Opinion → Size → Age → Color → Origin → Noun)
3. They live in a modern large white house.
Normally: Opinion → Size → Color → Noun (but “modern” can be both age and opinion)
Important Notes
- We usually don’t use more than three or four adjectives before a noun.
- Commas are used between adjectives of the same category: a kind, generous man.
- No commas between adjectives of different categories: a big red car.

3. an (old / interesting / Egyptian) book → ______
Exercise 2: Correct the order in these sentences:
1. She wears a blue nice dress.
