Future Forms: Will, Going to, Present Continuous
English has several ways to talk about the future. This lesson explains the three main future forms: “will”, “going to”, and the present continuous for future arrangements.
1. Will + Base Verb
Use: predictions, spontaneous decisions, promises, offers, and requests.
- I think it will rain tomorrow. (prediction)
- I will help you with your homework. (offer)
- I promise I will study harder. (promise)
Structure: Subject + will + base verb (+ not for negative). Contraction: ‘ll / won’t.
2. Be Going To + Base Verb
Use: plans, intentions, and predictions based on evidence.
- I am going to visit my grandmother this weekend. (plan)
- Look at those clouds! It is going to rain. (evidence)
3. Present Continuous for Future
Use: fixed arrangements and appointments (usually with a time/place).
- I am meeting my friend at 6 o’clock. (arrangement)
- We are flying to Paris next week. (fixed plan)
