Asking for and Giving Directions: Key Phrases and Vocabulary
Learning to ask for and give directions is a practical skill for any English learner. This lesson covers essential vocabulary, useful phrases, and model dialogues.
Important Places Vocabulary
- Public places: bank, hospital, police station, post office, library, supermarket, pharmacy, bus station, train station, airport
- Landmarks: traffic lights, roundabout, bridge, corner, crossroads, pedestrian crossing
Key Phrases for Asking
- Excuse me, where is the nearest bank?
- How do I get to the train station?
- Could you tell me the way to the museum?
- Is there a supermarket near here?
Key Phrases for Giving Directions
- Go straight ahead until you see the traffic lights.
- Turn left / right at the corner.
- It is on your left / right, next to the post office.
- Take the first street on the left.
- It is opposite the school / between the bank and the café.
Example Dialogue
Tourist: Excuse me, could you tell me how to get to the nearest pharmacy?
You: Of course. Go straight ahead for about 100 metres. Turn right at the traffic lights. The pharmacy is on your left, opposite the supermarket.
Tourist: Thank you very much!
You: You are welcome. Have a nice day!
Exercises
- Draw a simple map of your neighbourhood and label five places in English.
- Write a dialogue asking for directions from your school to the nearest library.
- Work with a partner: one asks for directions, the other responds. Swap roles.
