Writing an Essay: Structure, Introduction, Body, Conclusion

Essay writing is an essential skill for the BAC English exam. A well-structured essay should have a clear introduction, a well-developed body, and a strong conclusion.

Structure of an Essay

1. Introduction (10-15% of the essay): Hook the reader, provide background information, state your thesis (main argument).

2. Body paragraphs (70-80%): Each paragraph covers one main idea. Use the PEEL structure: Point (topic sentence), Evidence (example/fact), Explanation (analysis), Link (back to thesis).

3. Conclusion (10-15%): Restate your thesis, summarize main points, give a final thought or recommendation.

Useful Phrases for Each Part

Introduction: The issue of… / In todays world, … / It is often said that… / This essay will discuss… / The purpose of this essay is to…

Body: First of all, … / To begin with, … / Moreover, … / In addition, … / On the other hand, … / Furthermore, … / Another important aspect is…

Conclusion: In conclusion, … / To sum up, … / All things considered, … / It is clear that… / I strongly believe that… / In my opinion, …

Example Essay Plan: “Should students wear school uniforms?”

Introduction: The debate about school uniforms has been ongoing for years. Some argue that uniforms promote equality, while others believe they limit self-expression.

Body 1 (For): Uniforms create a sense of belonging and reduce social pressure about clothing.

Body 2 (Against): Uniforms limit students creativity and freedom of expression.

Body 3 (Balanced): A compromise could be a dress code rather than strict uniforms.

Conclusion: While both sides have valid points, schools should consider their specific context when making this decision.

Exercises

  1. Write an introduction for the topic: “The importance of learning foreign languages.”
  2. Write a conclusion for the topic: “Should technology be used in classrooms?”
  3. Plan an essay on: “The advantages and disadvantages of social media.”
  4. Write a full essay (150-200 words) on one of the topics discussed.

Summary

A good essay has three parts: introduction (hook + thesis), body (arguments + evidence), and conclusion (summary + final thought). Practice the structure and use linking words for coherence.
