Past Simple vs Present Perfect: Key Differences

Many BAC students confuse the Past Simple and the Present Perfect. This lesson explains the key differences between these two important tenses with clear examples.

Past Simple

Form: Subject + V2 (regular: -ed, irregular: 2nd column)

Use: Finished actions at a specific time in the past. The time is mentioned or understood.

Signal words: yesterday, last week/month/year, in 2020, when, ago, then.

Example: I visited Tlemcen last summer. (specific past time: last summer)

Present Perfect

Form: Subject + have/has + V3 (past participle)

Use: Past actions with a connection to the present, or when the time is not specified.

Signal words: ever, never, already, yet, just, recently, lately, for, since, so far.

Example: I have visited Tlemcen several times. (no specific time, experience)

Comparison Table

• Completed action (specific time): Past Simple – I saw that film yesterday.
• Life experience (no specific time): Present Perfect – I have seen that film.
• Present result: Present Perfect – I have lost my keys (I still dont have them).
• Past event: Past Simple – I lost my keys yesterday (but found them later).
• Duration up to now: Present Perfect – I have lived here for 10 years (I still live here).
• Finished duration: Past Simple – I lived there for 10 years (but I moved).

Examples

Example 1: She has never been to the Sahara Desert. (experience – no specific time) BUT: She visited the Sahara in 2022. (specific time: Past Simple)

Example 2: I have already finished my homework. (present result: my homework is done now) BUT: I finished my homework at 6 PM. (specific time in the past)

Example 3: He has lived in Algiers since 2015. (continues to now) BUT: He lived in Oran for 2 years. (finished period)

Summary
