Linking Words: Addition, Contrast, Result, Purpose
Linking words (also called transition words or connectors) are essential for coherent writing. They connect ideas, sentences, and paragraphs. This lesson covers the most important categories for BAC exams.
Linking Words for Addition
Used to add information: and, also, moreover, furthermore, in addition, besides, as well as, not only…but also.
Examples: She speaks Arabic fluently. Moreover, she speaks French and English well. / Not only did he study hard, but he also helped his classmates.
Linking Words for Contrast
Used to show difference or opposition: but, however, although, even though, despite, in spite of, whereas, while, on the other hand, nevertheless, yet.
Examples: Although the exam was difficult, most students passed. / Algeria has vast desert areas, whereas the coastal region is green and fertile.
Linking Words for Result/Consequence
Used to show results: so, therefore, consequently, as a result, thus, hence, for this reason.
Examples: He studied very hard; therefore, he got excellent marks. / The weather was bad. Consequently, the match was postponed.
Linking Words for Purpose
Used to express purpose: to, in order to, so as to, so that, for.
Examples: I went to the library to borrow some books. / She studies hard so that she can get a scholarship.

Example 1: Algeria is known for its rich history. Moreover, it has diverse landscapes ranging from the Sahara desert to the Mediterranean coast.
Example 2: Although the BAC exam is challenging, thousands of students succeed every year through hard work.
Example 3: The government invested in education; as a result, literacy rates have improved significantly.
Example 4: Many students take private lessons in order to improve their grades.
