The Present Tenses: Simple, Continuous, Perfect
English has several present tenses, each used for different purposes. Mastering them is essential for clear communication.
1. Present Simple
Form: Subject + base verb (add -s/-es for he/she/it)
Uses:
— General truths and facts: The sun rises in the east.
— Habits and routines: I wake up at 7 am.
— Permanent situations: She works in a hospital.
— Scheduled events: The train leaves at 6 pm.
2. Present Continuous
Form: Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing
Uses:
— Actions happening now: I am reading a book.
— Temporary situations: He is staying with his uncle.
— Future arrangements: We are meeting tomorrow.
— Repeated actions with annoyance: She is always complaining.
3. Present Perfect
Form: Subject + have/has + past participle
Uses:
— Past actions with present relevance: I have finished my homework.
— Life experiences: She has visited Paris.
— Unfinished time periods: I have seen him today.
— Actions that started in the past and continue: He has lived here for 10 years.
