Writing an Essay: Structure and Techniques
Essay writing is a key skill for the Baccalaureate exam. A well-structured essay demonstrates clear thinking and effective communication.
Essay Structure
Introduction: Hook (interesting opening), Background (context), Thesis statement (main argument). Example: “In today’s globalised world, learning English has become essential. This essay will argue that English is crucial for academic and professional success.”
Body paragraphs: Each paragraph should have: Topic sentence, Supporting details, Examples, Concluding sentence. Use linking words (firstly, moreover, however, consequently, in addition).
Conclusion: Restate thesis, Summarise main points, Final thought. Example: “In conclusion, mastering English opens doors to education, career, and cultural exchange.”
Types of Essays
1. Argumentative: Present arguments for/against a topic.
2. Descriptive: Describe a person, place, or event.
3. Narrative: Tell a story.
