The Verb “To Be”: Complete Guide
The verb to be is the most important verb in English. It is used to describe people, places, things, and states. It is an irregular verb.
Present forms of To Be
- I am (I’m) a student.
- You are (You’re) my friend.
- He/She/It is (He’s, She’s, It’s) nice.
- We are (We’re) from Algeria.
- They are (They’re) teachers.
Negative form
Add not after the verb : I am not (I’m not), you are not (aren’t), he/she/it is not (isn’t), we/they are not (aren’t).
Question form
Invert the subject and verb : Am I late? Are you ready? Is she your sister?
Uses of To Be
- Identity : I am Ahmed.
- Description : The sky is blue.
- Location : My book is on the table.
- Age : She is 16 years old.
- Feeling : We are happy.
