Adverbial Clauses of Time: When, While, Before, After, Until, As Soon As
Adverbial clauses of time are subordinate clauses that tell us WHEN an action happens. They are introduced by time conjunctions such as when, while, before, after, until, as soon as, since, and whenever. These clauses are essential for expressing the sequence and timing of events in English.
1. Structure of Time Clauses
A time clause consists of: Time conjunction + subject + verb. The time clause can come at the beginning or end of the sentence. When it comes at the beginning, it is followed by a comma.
- Beginning: When I arrived, they were having dinner.
- End: They were having dinner when I arrived.
2. Important Grammar Rule: No Future in Time Clauses
When a time clause refers to the future, we use the present simple (not the future with “will”). The main clause uses the future tense.
- ✅ When she comes, I will tell her. (NOT: When she will come…)
- ✅ As soon as the exam finishes, we will celebrate.
- ✅ He will call you before he leaves.
3. Common Time Conjunctions and Their Uses

Until / Till – Up to that time
Indicates that an action continues up to a specific time.
