Relative Clauses: Defining and Non-Defining

Defining Relative Clauses

Essential information about the noun. No commas. Who/that (people), which/that (things), where (places), when (times). Ex: The man who lives next door is a doctor. The book that I read was great.

Non-Defining Relative Clauses

Extra information, not essential. Set off by commas. Cannot use that. Ex: My brother, who lives in London, is an engineer. The Eiffel Tower, which is in Paris, is famous.

Exercises:

1. Combine the sentences using a relative clause.
2. Add commas where necessary.
