Expressing Contrast: Although, Despite, However

Although/Even though + clause

Although it was raining, we went out. Even though he is rich, he is unhappy.

Despite/In spite of + noun/gerund

Despite the rain, we went out. In spite of being tired, he continued working.

However + adjective/adverb + clause

However hard he tried, he couldn’t open the door. However, can also start a sentence: It was raining. However, we went out.

Exercises:

1. Rewrite using despite.
2. Complete with although or however.
