Reading Comprehension: Identifying Main Ideas and Details

Main idea

The most important point the author wants to convey. Usually found in the first or last sentence of a paragraph.

Supporting details

Facts, examples, statistics, reasons that support the main idea. Types: examples, statistics, quotes, anecdotes.

Strategies

Skim the text first. Read the topic sentences. Look for signal words. Take notes. Summarize each paragraph.
