- Unit: Grammar – Articles (Definite and Zero Article)
- Duration: 1 hour
🎯 Learning Objectives
- Understand when to use the definite article “the” and the zero article (∅).
- Distinguish between specific and general references.
- Master advanced rules: geographical names, abstract nouns, institutions.
- Apply article rules in Bac-style exercises and writing tasks.
📝 Introduction
Articles are among the most frequently tested grammar points in the Baccalaureate English exam. While “a/an” (indefinite articles) are relatively straightforward, the use of “the” (definite article) and the zero article (∅) can be tricky, especially for non-native speakers. This lesson covers the advanced rules you need for the Bac exam, with plenty of examples and practice exercises.
🔷 1. The Definite Article “The”
We use “the” when the listener/reader knows exactly which person, thing, or idea we are referring to. This includes:
✅ Specific Reference
- Something already mentioned: “I saw a dog. The dog was barking.”
- Something unique: “The sun, the moon, the Earth, the sky.”
- Superlatives and ordinal numbers: “the best, the first, the most important.”
- Defined by context: “Please close the door.” (we both know which door).
🌍 Geographical Names with “The”
- Rivers: the Nile, the Seine, the Amazon
- Seas and oceans: the Mediterranean, the Atlantic Ocean
- Mountain ranges: the Himalayas, the Atlas Mountains
- Deserts: the Sahara, the Gobi Desert
- Groups of islands: the Bahamas, the Canary Islands
- Countries with plural names: the United States, the Netherlands
🏛️ Institutions
- “She goes to the mosque every Friday.” (specific mosque)
- “He is at the hospital.” (as a visitor — not as a patient)
🔶 2. The Zero Article (∅) — No Article
We do not use an article in the following cases:
✅ General and Plural References
- Plural countable nouns (general): “∅ Dogs are loyal animals.” (all dogs in general)
- Uncountable nouns (general): “∅ Water is essential for life.” / “∅ Music helps me relax.”
🌍 Geographical Names without “The”
- Most countries: ∅ Algeria, ∅ France, ∅ Morocco
- Single mountains: ∅ Mount Everest, ∅ Djurdjura
- Lakes: ∅ Lake Chad, ∅ Lake Michigan
- Continents: ∅ Africa, ∅ Europe, ∅ Asia
- Cities: ∅ Algiers, ∅ Paris, ∅ New York
🏫 Meals, Sports, and Activities
- “I have ∅ breakfast at 7 am.”
- “She plays ∅ tennis and ∅ football.”
- “He studies ∅ mathematics.”
🏥 Institutions (primary purpose)
- “He is in ∅ hospital.” (as a patient)
- “She goes to ∅ school every day.” (as a student)
- “They go to ∅ university.”
- “He is in ∅ prison.” (as a prisoner)
⚠️ 3. Tricky Cases for the Bac Exam
- Institutions: “go to school” (student) vs “go to the school” (visitor/parent) — this distinction often appears in exams!
- “The” + adjective as noun group: “the rich, the poor, the elderly, the disabled.”
- Titles and names: ∅ President Tebboune (title + name = no article) vs the president (title alone = article).
- Fixed expressions: “at ∅ home, at ∅ work, in ∅ bed, by ∅ car, on ∅ foot.”
📌 Bac-Style Examples
① “∅ Algeria is located in ∅ North Africa, bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north.”
② “∅ Pollution is one of the biggest challenges facing the modern world.”
③ “Every morning, I have ∅ breakfast at 7, then I go to ∅ school. After school, I visit the library.”
