English Future Tenses: Simple Future, Future Continuous, Future Perfect

1. Simple Future
The Simple Future is used to talk about actions that will happen at a later time. There are two main forms:
A. Will + Base Verb
- Form: Subject + will + base verb
- Negative: Subject + will not (won’t) + base verb
- Question: Will + subject + base verb?
Uses of “will”:
- Predictions about the future: “It will rain tomorrow.”
- Spontaneous decisions: “I’m thirsty. I’ll get a glass of water.”
- Promises and offers: “I will help you with your homework.”
- Facts about the future: “The sun will rise at 6:00 AM.”
B. Be Going To + Base Verb
- Form: Subject + am/is/are + going to + base verb
- Negative: Subject + am/is/are + not + going to + base verb
- Question: Am/Is/Are + subject + going to + base verb?
Uses of “be going to”:
- Plans and intentions: “I am going to study medicine at university.”
- Predictions based on evidence: “The sky is dark. It is going to rain.”
C. Difference Between “Will” and “Going To”

2. Future Continuous
- Form: Subject + will be + verb-ing
- Negative: Subject + will not be + verb-ing
- Question: Will + subject + be + verb-ing?
Uses:
- Actions in progress at a specific time in the future: “This time next week, I will be flying to London.”
- Actions that will happen as part of a routine: “I’ll be having breakfast at 7 AM as usual.”
- Polite questions about plans: “Will you be using the car tonight?”
Examples:
- “At 8 PM tonight, we will be watching the match.”
- “Don’t call me at noon; I will be taking my exam.”
- “In 2035, people will be driving electric cars.”
Time expressions: at this time tomorrow, at 5 PM next Monday, this time next year, in the coming years.
3. Future Perfect
- Form: Subject + will have + past participle
- Negative: Subject + will not have + past participle
- Question: Will + subject + have + past participle?
Uses:
- Actions that will be completed before a specific time in the future: “By 2027, I will have graduated from university.”
- Duration up to a future point: “By the time you arrive, I will have waited for two hours.”
Examples:
- “By next June, we will have finished the Bac exam.”
- “She will have written the report by Friday.”
- “They will have built the bridge by 2028.”
Time expressions: by + time, by the time + clause, by next week/month/year, by 2027/2030, before + time.
4. Comparison Table

Exercise 1: Choose the correct form.
- “Look at those clouds! It ______ (will rain / is going to rain).” → is going to rain
- “I promise I ______ (will help / am going to help) you.” → will help
- “This time next week, we ______ (will swim / will be swimming) in the sea.” → will be swimming
- “By June, I ______ (will finish / will have finished) all my exams.” → will have finished
- “I think Algeria ______ (will win / is going to win) the match.” → will win
Exercise 2: Complete the sentences.
- By 2030, scientists ____________ (discover) a cure for many diseases. → will have discovered
- At 10 AM tomorrow, I ____________ (take) my English test. → will be taking
- She ____________ (study) law at university next year. → is going to study
- I’m sure you ____________ (pass) the Bac exam. → will pass
- By the time we arrive, they ____________ (already / eat) dinner. → will have already eaten
6. Bac-Style Exam Questions
Question 1: Put the verbs in brackets in the correct tense.
“By the end of this year, I (save) enough money to buy a car. I (work) for six months by then. Next week, I (start) looking for a good car.”
Answer: will have saved, will have been working (or will have worked), will start / am going to start
Question 2: Rewrite using the words in brackets.
“I intend to become a doctor.” (going to) → I am going to become a doctor.
“She will probably call us later.” (might) → She might call us later.
Summary
- Use will for spontaneous decisions, predictions, promises.
- Use going to for plans and predictions with evidence.
- Use Future Continuous for actions in progress at a future time.
- Use Future Perfect for actions completed before a future time.
