Conditional Sentences: Zero, First, Second, and Third
Conditional sentences express a condition and its result. They are crucial for the Algerian Baccalaureate exam and for clear communication in English.
Zero Conditional
If + Present Simple, Present Simple. General truths and scientific facts.
Ex: If you heat ice, it melts. / When it rains, the grass gets wet.
First Conditional
If + Present Simple, will + infinitive. Possible future situations.
Ex: If you study hard, you will pass the exam.
Also: unless, provided that, as long as.
Second Conditional
If + Past Simple, would/could/might + infinitive. Unreal present situations.
Ex: If I had more money, I would travel around the world.
Were replaces was: If I were you, I would accept.
Third Conditional
If + Past Perfect, would/could/might + have + past participle. Unreal past situations (regret).
Ex: If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.
Mixed Conditionals
Past condition with present result: If I had taken that job (past), I would be rich now (present).
