English — Grammar: Conditional Sentences — Types and Usage — 2nd Year Secondary

Conditional sentences (if-clauses) express a condition and its result. There are four main types of conditionals in English, each used for different situations.

I. Zero Conditional (General Truths)

Used for scientific facts and general truths. Structure: If + present simple, present simple.

Example: “If you heat water to 100°C, it boils.”
“If it rains, the grass gets wet.”

II. First Conditional (Real Future Possibility)

Used for possible future situations. Structure: If + present simple, will + base verb.

Example: “If it rains tomorrow, I will stay at home.”
“If you study hard, you will pass the exam.”

III. Second Conditional (Unreal Present/Future)

Used for imaginary or unlikely situations. Structure: If + past simple, would + base verb.

Example: “If I had a million dollars, I would travel around the world.”
“If I were you, I would accept the offer.”

Note: “Were” is used for all subjects in the if-clause (subjunctive mood).

IV. Third Conditional (Unreal Past)

Used to imagine a different past (regret or relief). Structure: If + past perfect, would have + past participle.

Example: “If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.”
“If she had left earlier, she would have caught the bus.”

V. Mixed Conditionals

Sometimes we mix second and third conditionals: Past condition + present result OR present condition + past result.

Example: “If I had taken that job (past), I would be rich now (present).”

VI. Exercises

Exercise 1: Complete the sentences:
1. If I (have) ___ wings, I (fly) ___ to Paris.
2. If it (rain) ___ later, we (cancel) ___ the picnic.
3. If she (study) ___ more, she (get) ___ better grades last year.

Exercise 2: Identify the type of conditional:
“If I were rich, I would buy a big house.” — Type: ___
