Comparative and Superlative Adjectives

We use comparatives to compare two things and superlatives to compare three or more things.

Comparative Adjectives

Short adjectives (1-2 syllables): adjective + -er + than

• tall → taller than
• small → smaller than
• big → bigger than (double final consonant)
• happy → happier than (y→i)

Long adjectives (3+ syllables): more + adjective + than

• beautiful → more beautiful than
• important → more important than

Superlative Adjectives

Short adjectives: the + adjective + -est

• the tallest
• the smallest
• the biggest

Long adjectives: the most + adjective

• the most beautiful
• the most important

Irregular Forms

Adjective	Comparative	Superlative
good	better	the best
bad	worse	the worst
far	farther/further	the farthest/furthest
much/many	more	the most
