English Grammar: Conditional Sentences (If Clauses)

Conditional sentences express a condition and its result. They are used to talk about real or imagined situations. English has four main types of conditional sentences, each with its own structure and meaning.

Zero Conditional (General Truths)

Used for facts that are always true.

• Structure: If + present simple, present simple.
• Example: “If you heat ice, it melts.” / “If it rains, the ground gets wet.”

First Conditional (Real Future Possibility)

Used for possible situations in the future.

• Structure: If + present simple, will + base verb.
• Example: “If I study hard, I will pass the exam.” / “If you come early, we will have time to talk.”

Second Conditional (Unreal Present/Future)

Used for hypothetical or unlikely situations.

• Structure: If + past simple, would + base verb.
• Example: “If I had a million dollars, I would travel around the world.” / “If I were you, I would accept the offer.”

Third Conditional (Unreal Past)

Used for impossible situations in the past (regret or alternative outcomes).

• Structure: If + past perfect, would have + past participle.
• Example: “If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.” / “If she had left earlier, she would have caught the bus.”

Mixed Conditionals

Combine different time references.

• Example: “If I had studied medicine (past), I would be a doctor now (present).”

Exercises

1. Complete the sentences:
   
   a. If it ________ (rain) tomorrow, we ________ (stay) at home.
   
   b. If I ________ (know) the answer, I ________ (tell) you.
2. Identify the type of conditional: “If I had studied more, I would have passed.”
3. Rewrite using conditionals: “I didnt study, so I failed.” → “If I ________.”
