Present Perfect vs Past Simple

The Present Perfect connects past and present. The Past Simple refers to completed past actions. Knowing the difference is essential for good English.

Present Perfect

• Form: have/has + past participle.
• Use: unspecified past, experience, result. Example: I have visited Paris.
• Keywords: ever, never, just, already, yet, since, for.

Past Simple

• Form: V-ed or irregular form.
• Use: finished past time. Example: I visited Paris in 2019.
• Keywords: yesterday, ago, last, in (year).

Examples

Example 1: I have finished my homework. (result now) vs I finished my homework at 5pm. (specific time)

Example 2: She has never been to London. (experience) vs She went to London last year. (past action)
