Prepositions of Place
Prepositions of place tell us where something is located. The most common ones are IN, ON, AT, UNDER, BEHIND, IN FRONT OF, BETWEEN, NEXT TO.
IN
Used for enclosed spaces, cities, countries, rooms:
- “The book is in my bag.”
- “He lives in Algiers.”
- “She is in the kitchen.”
ON
Used for surfaces, days, streets:
- “The pen is on the table.”
- “My house is on Omar street.”
AT
Used for specific points, addresses, events:
- “She is at the door.”
- “I am at school.”
- “The meeting is at 5 o’clock.”
Other prepositions
- Under: “The cat is under the chair.”
- Behind: “The garden is behind the house.”
- In front of: “The car is in front of the building.”
- Next to / Beside: “The bank is next to the pharmacy.”
- Between: “The school is between the mosque and the hospital.”
Exercises
- Complete with in/on/at: “The cat is ___ the box – The book is ___ the desk – She is ___ home”.
- Describe your classroom using 5 different prepositions.
- Answer: “Where is your school? Where is your house?”
