The Past Perfect Tense

The Past Perfect shows that an action happened before another action in the past.

Formation

\n

Positive: Subject + had + V3 (I had finished my homework before dinner). Negative: Subject + hadn’t + V3 (I hadn’t finished my homework). Interrogative: Had + Subject + V3? (Had you finished your work?)

Uses

\n

1- An action before another past action: The train had already left when I arrived.
2- With by the time, before, after, already, just, never: By the time he arrived everyone had left. I had never seen such a beautiful sunset before.
3- Cause and effect: He was tired because he hadn’t slept well.
