Gerunds and Infinitives
1. Gerund (V-ing)
Subject: Swimming is good. After prepositions: Thank you for coming. After certain verbs: enjoy, avoid, suggest, finish, mind. I enjoy reading.
2. Infinitive (to + V1)
Purpose: I went to buy milk. After certain verbs: want, decide, hope, promise, plan, need. I want to learn English.
3. Verbs with Both (different meaning)
Remember + gerund (past): I remember meeting him. Remember + infinitive (future): Remember to buy milk. Stop + gerund (quit): I stopped smoking. Stop + infinitive (pause): I stopped to smoke.
Exercises
- Complete: I enjoy ______ (listen) to music. I want ______ (travel).
- Choose: I stopped (to smoke/smoking) for health.
