Understanding direct and indirect objects is important for sentence structure and using correct pronouns.

I. Direct Object

The direct object receives the action of the verb directly. It answers “what?” or “whom?” after the verb.
Example: “She wrote a letter.” (What did she write? → a letter)
“He loves his mother.” (Whom does he love? → his mother)

II. Indirect Object

The indirect object indicates to whom or for whom the action is done. It answers “to whom?” or “for whom?”
Example: “She gave her friend a gift.” (To whom did she give? → her friend)
“He bought his sister a book.” (For whom did he buy? → his sister)

III. Position in the Sentence

Pattern 1: Subject + verb + indirect object + direct object
Example: “I sent my mother a letter.” (my mother = IO, a letter = DO)

Pattern 2: Subject + verb + direct object + preposition (to/for) + indirect object
Example: “I sent a letter to my mother.”

Which verbs use “to”? give, send, show, tell, read, write, lend, offer, promise.
Example: “She showed the photo to her friend.”

Which verbs use “for”? buy, get, make, cook, find, choose, book.
Example: “He bought a gift for his wife.”

IV. Object Pronouns

When replacing objects with pronouns:
Direct object pronouns: me, you, him, her, it, us, them.
Indirect object pronouns: me, you, him, her, it, us, them (same forms).

Examples:
– “I gave John a book.” → “I gave him a book.” (or “I gave a book to him.”)
– “She bought flowers for her mother.” → “She bought her flowers.”

V. Exercises

Exercise 1: Identify the direct and indirect objects:
1. He told his friends a funny story.
2. She cooked her family a delicious meal.
3. The teacher gave the students homework.
4. I lent my car to my brother.

Exercise 2: Rewrite using object pronouns:
1. Give the book to Mary. → Give …
2. I bought flowers for my wife. → I bought …
3. Show the photos to your parents. → Show …
