Articles are determiners that precede nouns. English has definite (the) and indefinite (a/an) articles, as well as the zero article (no article).

I. Indefinite Articles: A and An

“A” is used before consonant sounds, and “an” before vowel sounds.
Examples: a book, a university (starts with /j/ sound), an apple, an hour (silent h).

Uses :
– First mention: “I saw a bird in the garden.”
– With professions: “She is a teacher.”
– In exclamations: “What a beautiful day!”
– With nationalities: “He is an Algerian.”

II. Definite Article: The

Uses :
– Something already mentioned: “I saw a bird. The bird was singing.”
– Unique things: the sun, the moon, the world, the sky.
– Superlatives: the best, the most beautiful.
– Ordinal numbers: the first, the second.
– With adjectives as nouns: the rich, the poor.
– Geographical names: the USA, the UK, the Sahara, the Nile.
– Before plural surnames: the Smiths.

III. Zero Article (No Article)

Uses :
– General statements with plural/uncountable nouns: “Books are important.” “Water is essential.”
– Proper nouns: Algeria, Ahmed, Paris.
– Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner.
– Sports and games: football, chess.
– Languages: English, French, Arabic.
– Prepositional phrases: at school, in bed, by car, on foot.

IV. Exercises

Complete with a, an, the, or ∅ (no article):
1. … elephant is … large animal.

3. I usually have … breakfast at 7 AM.
4. … sun rises in … east.
5. He wants to be … engineer.
