Grammar: The Passive Voice (All Tenses)

The passive voice is used when the focus is on the action rather than the person doing it. It is an essential structure for formal and academic writing in English.

Formation

Subject + be (conjugated) + past participle (by + agent)

Passive in Different Tenses

Tense	Active Voice	Passive Voice
Present Simple	They build houses.	Houses are built.
Present Continuous	They are building a house.	A house is being built.
Past Simple	They built a house.	A house was built.
Past Continuous	They were building a house.	A house was being built.
Present Perfect	They have built a house.	A house has been built.
Past Perfect	They had built a house.	A house had been built.
Future (will)	They will build a house.	A house will be built.
Modal verbs	They must build a house.	A house must be built.

When to Use Passive Voice

• When the agent is unknown: My car was stolen.
• When the agent is obvious: The criminal was arrested.
• In formal/academic writing: It is believed that…
• To emphasize the action/receiver: The president was elected.

Exercises

1. Change to passive: “Shakespeare wrote Hamlet. Someone is cleaning the room. They will announce the results tomorrow. The chef has cooked dinner.”
2. Rewrite the sentences and decide if passive is appropriate: “Someone stole my wallet. People speak English worldwide. The government built a new hospital.”
3. Write 5 sentences in the passive voice about historical events.
