Writing: How to Write a Narrative Paragraph
Writing a narrative paragraph is an essential skill for the Baccalaureate English exam. A narrative paragraph tells a story or describes a sequence of events. This lesson is for literary stream students.
Structure of a Narrative Paragraph
- Topic sentence: Introduces the story/event (When? Where? Who?)
- Supporting sentences: Describe the events in chronological order using time connectors.
- Concluding sentence: Wraps up the story or gives a final thought.
Useful Time Connectors
- First / Firstly / To begin with
- Then / Next / After that
- Later / Afterwards
- Eventually / Finally / In the end
- Suddenly / All of a sudden
- Meanwhile / At the same time
Example Narrative Paragraph
“Last summer, I had the most amazing experience of my life. First, my family and I travelled to the beautiful beaches of Oran. Then, we spent the whole week swimming, fishing, and exploring the coastline. One afternoon, we decided to visit the famous Santa Cruz fort. Suddenly, the weather changed and it started raining heavily. We ran to find shelter and ended up in a small café where we met a kind old man who told us fascinating stories about the history of the city. Finally, the rain stopped and we returned to our hotel. That day taught me that unexpected moments often become the most memorable ones.”
Tips for Effective Narrative Writing
- Use past tenses (Past Simple, Past Continuous, Past Perfect).
- Include descriptive details to make the story vivid.
- Use direct speech to make it more engaging.
- Organize events logically using time connectors.
- Add emotions and personal reactions.
Exercises
- Write a narrative paragraph about “A memorable holiday” (100-120 words).
- Underline the time connectors in the example paragraph above.
- Rewrite the following events as a narrative paragraph using appropriate connectors: “Woke up late. Missed the bus. Walked to school. Arrived late. Teacher was understanding.”
