Future: Going To vs Will

There are two main ways to express the future in English with different uses.

Will

Spontaneous decisions: “I will help you with your homework.”
Promises and offers: “I will call you tomorrow.” “I will carry your bag.”
Predictions based on opinion: “I think it will rain later.” “She will be a great doctor.”

Going To

Plans and intentions made before speaking: “I am going to study medicine at university.”
Predictions based on evidence: “Look at those dark clouds! It is going to rain.” “Watch out! You are going to drop that!”

Exercises

1. Complete with will or going to: “I think it ___ rain soon.” “She ___ have a baby in April (she already knows).”

2. Write 4 sentences with will and 4 with going to, explaining the difference.
