Hedging Language: Expressions of Caution
Hedging is using cautious language to avoid making strong, absolute statements.
Why hedge?
- To be more polite and diplomatic.
- To show uncertainty or possibility.
- To avoid over-generalisation.
- To be academically honest.
Hedging expressions
- Modal verbs: may, might, could, can
- Adverbs: perhaps, possibly, probably, apparently, seemingly
- Verbs: seem, appear, tend, suggest, indicate
- Quantifiers: some, many, a few, a number of
- Phrases: It could be argued that… / It is possible that… / There is evidence that… / In general…
Examples
Strong: “Smoking causes cancer.”
Hedged: “Smoking may cause cancer.” / “It is widely believed that smoking causes cancer.”
Strong: “Everyone likes pizza.”
Hedged: “Many people seem to like pizza.”
Exercise
Rewrite using hedging language:
- Video games are bad for children.
- Social media destroys real friendships.
- The government should ban cars from city centres.
