May and Might: Possibility and Permission

May

Permission: “May I come in?” (more formal than “can”)

Possibility (50%): “It may rain today.”

Might

Possibility (30% – less sure): “I might go to the party.”

Might is the past of may: “He said he might come.”

Difference

• May = more certain (about 50% chance).
• Might = less certain (about 30% chance).

Examples

• “She may be at home.” (I think it’s possible.)
• “He might be late.” (I’m not sure, but maybe.)
• “May I use your phone?” (polite request)
• “It might snow tomorrow.” (less likely)

Negative

may not / might not: “She may not come.” / “He might not know.”

Exercise
