The Passive Voice: Formation and Uses Across All Tenses
The passive voice is used when we want to focus on the action or the receiver of the action rather than the doer. It is very common in academic and formal writing.
Formation of the Passive Voice
Basic structure: Subject + be (conjugated) + past participle (V3) + (by + agent).
The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence.
Passive Voice in Different Tenses
Present Simple: am/is/are + V3 – “The letters are delivered every day.”
Present Continuous: am/is/are being + V3 – “The house is being painted.”
Past Simple: was/were + V3 – “The car was repaired yesterday.”
Past Continuous: was/were being + V3 – “The road was being repaired.”
Present Perfect: have/has been + V3 – “The work has been finished.”
Past Perfect: had been + V3 – “The letter had been sent.”
Future (will): will be + V3 – “The meeting will be held tomorrow.”
Modal verbs: modal + be + V3 – “This must be done carefully.”
When to Use the Passive Voice
- When the agent is unknown: “My car was stolen.”
- When the agent is obvious or unimportant: “The criminals were arrested.”
- In formal and scientific writing: “The experiment was conducted.”
