Describing people is a very useful skill in English. Whether you are talking about your family, friends, or favourite characters, knowing how to describe height, build, hair, eyes, and personality will help you communicate better.

Learning Objectives

• Use vocabulary to describe physical appearance (height, build, hair, eyes).
• Use adjectives to describe personality traits.
• Form sentences using “have/has got” and “to be” for descriptions.
• Write a short paragraph describing a person.

1. Describing Height and Build (الطول والبنية)

Height: tall (طويل), short (قصير), medium-height (متوسط الطول)

Build: thin (نحيف), slim (رشيق), plump (ممتلئ), muscular (عضلي), well-built (قوي البنية), fat (سمين — use carefully), average build (بنية متوسطة)

2. Describing Hair and Eyes (الشعر والعينان)

Hair length: long hair, short hair, medium-length hair

Hair type: straight (مستقيم/أملس), curly (مجعد), wavy (مموج), bald (أصلع)

Hair colour: blonde (أشقر), brown (بني), black (أسود), red (أحمر), grey (رمادي/شائب)

Eyes: blue eyes, brown eyes, green eyes, black eyes, big/small eyes

3. Describing Personality (الشخصية)

Positive: friendly (ودود), kind (لطيف), funny (مضحك), clever (ذكي), brave (شجاع), helpful (مساعد), polite (مهذب), honest (صادق)

Negative: shy (خجول), lazy (كسول), rude (وقح), selfish (أناني), noisy (صاخب), mean (لئيم)

4. Grammar: How to Describe

Use verb “to be” + adjective: “She is tall and thin.” / “He is very friendly.”

Use verb “have/has got” + noun: “She has got long curly hair.” / “He has got blue eyes.”

Examples

Example 1: My mother is medium-height and slim. She has got long straight brown hair and brown eyes. She is very kind and helpful.

Example 2: My best friend Ahmed is tall and well-built. He has got short black curly hair. He is funny and clever. Everyone likes him.

Example 3: Our English teacher is tall and thin. She has got short blonde hair and blue eyes. She is very polite and friendly.

2. Describe yourself using 5 sentences (appearance + personality).
3. Correct: “She have got long hair.” / “He is have blue eyes.”
4. Write a description of your father or mother (4-5 sentences).
5. Read the description and guess who it is: “He is short and thin. He has got big brown eyes and short black hair. He is very funny and clever. He wears a red and blue costume and lives in a mushroom house.”

Home Activity

Choose a family member or a friend. Write a short paragraph (5-6 sentences) describing their appearance and personality. Read your description to your family and ask them to guess who it is.
