Telling Stories: Narrative Tenses and Sequencing
Storytelling requires using the right tenses and sequencing words to make events clear and engaging.
Narrative Tenses
- Past Simple: For completed actions in order. “He arrived, sat down, and ordered coffee.”
- Past Continuous: For background actions. “It was raining when I left.”
- Past Perfect: For actions before another past action. “She had already eaten when I arrived.”
Sequencing Words
- First, then, next, after that, later, finally
- Before, after, while, during, as soon as
- Suddenly, immediately, eventually, in the end
Sample Story Opening
“Last summer, I went on a trip to Timgad with my family. We had prepared everything the night before. When we arrived, the sun was shining brightly. First, we visited the Roman ruins. Then, we had a picnic near the ancient theatre. Suddenly, it started raining, so we took shelter under a tree. Eventually, the rain stopped and we continued exploring. It was a wonderful day!”
