Making Suggestions and Recommendations
Knowing how to make suggestions politely is useful for conversations and group decision-making.
Common Phrases for Suggestions
- Let’s + base verb: “Let’s go to the park.”
- Why don’t we/you + base verb: “Why don’t we watch a film?”
- How about / What about + verb-ing: “How about going for a walk?”
- We could + base verb: “We could try the new restaurant.”
Polite Recommendations
- I recommend / suggest + verb-ing: “I recommend visiting the museum.”
- You should / ought to + base verb: “You should try the couscous.”
- If I were you, I would + base verb: “If I were you, I would study more.”
Responding to Suggestions
- Good idea! / That sounds great! / Why not?
- I’m not sure about that. / Maybe another time.
- That’s a nice idea, but I’d rather…
Exercises
