Linking Words: Addition, Contrast, Cause and Result
Linking words connect ideas and make writing coherent.
Addition
- And: I like reading and writing.
- Moreover: The car is affordable. Moreover, it is reliable.
- In addition: In addition to studying, he works.
Contrast
- But/However: I wanted to go, but I was tired.
- Although: Although it rained, we enjoyed the picnic.
- Despite: Despite the rain, we went out.
- Whereas: She likes tea, whereas I prefer coffee.
Cause and Result
- Because: I stayed home because I was ill.
- Therefore: He didn’t study. Therefore, he failed.
- So: It rained, so we took an umbrella.
- Due to: The flight was delayed due to bad weather.
Exercises
- Combine: “She is intelligent. She is hardworking.” (addition)
- Combine: “He trained hard. He didn’t win.” (contrast)
- Write a paragraph using at least 5 linking words.
