Past Simple Tense — Regular and Irregular Verbs — English 3rd Year Middle School — Algerian Curriculum

The Past Simple Tense is used to talk about completed actions and events in the past. It is one of the most important tenses in English. In this lesson, we will learn how to form and use the Past Simple with regular and irregular verbs.

Lesson Objectives

  • Understand when to use the Past Simple tense.
  • Form the Past Simple of regular verbs (-ed ending).
  • Learn common irregular verb forms.
  • Form negative sentences and questions in Past Simple.
  • Use time expressions with the Past Simple.

Lesson Explanation

1. When do we use the Past Simple?
We use the Past Simple to talk about: completed actions in the past (e.g., “I visited Algiers last summer.”), past habits or routines (e.g., “When I was young, I played football every day.”), and past states or feelings (e.g., “I was happy yesterday.”).

2. Forming the Past Simple — Regular Verbs:
For regular verbs, we add -ed to the base form:
• walk → walked, play → played, listen → listened, study → studied
Spelling rules:
• If the verb ends in -e, add only -d: like → liked, dance → danced
• If the verb ends in consonant + y, change y to i and add -ed: study → studied, try → tried
• If the verb ends in vowel + y, add -ed: play → played, enjoy → enjoyed
• Short verbs (CVC pattern): double the last consonant: stop → stopped, plan → planned

3. Irregular Verbs:
Some verbs do not follow the -ed rule. They have special past forms that must be memorised:
• go → went, eat → ate, see → saw, have → had, do → did, make → made
• buy → bought, bring → brought, think → thought, teach → taught
• write → wrote, speak → spoke, take → took, give → gave
• come → came, run → ran, swim → swam, sing → sang, sit → sat
• be → was/were (was: I/he/she/it; were: we/you/they)

4. Negative Form:
Use did not (didn’t) + base form of the verb:
• Affirmative: I visited the museum yesterday.
• Negative: I did not (didn’t) visit the museum yesterday.
• She went to school. → She didn’t go to school.

5. Question Form:
Use Did + subject + base form of the verb:
• Affirmative: They played football.
• Yes/No question: Did they play football? — Yes, they did. / No, they didn’t.
• Wh-question: Where did you go yesterday? — I went to the park.

6. Common Time Expressions:
yesterday, last night/week/month/year, ago (two days ago, a year ago), in 2019, in the past, when I was young, then, after that.

7. Past Simple of “Be”:
The verb “to be” is special: I/he/she/it → was. We/you/they → were.
• Affirmative: I was at school yesterday. They were happy.
• Negative: She was not (wasn’t) at home. We were not (weren’t) tired.
• Question: Was he late? Were you at the party?

Examples

Example 1: Change to Past Simple — “I play football every Friday.”

Answer: “I played football last Friday.” — Regular verb (play → played), time changes from “every Friday” to “last Friday”.

Example 2: Make negative — “She visited her grandmother yesterday.”

Answer: “She did not visit her grandmother yesterday.” — Use didn’t + base form (not “didn’t visited”).

Example 3: Make a question — “They went to the cinema last night.”

Answer: “Did they go to the cinema last night?” — Use Did + base form (go, not went).

Practice Exercises

  1. Write the past form of these verbs: (cook, play, study, stop, like, go, buy, see, eat, have)
  2. Complete with Past Simple: “Yesterday, I ___ (wake) up at 7 am, ___ (eat) breakfast, and ___ (go) to school.”
  3. Make these sentences negative: a) “Ali played tennis.” b) “We went to the market.”
  4. Make questions: a) “You visited Paris.” b) “She wrote a letter.”
  5. Correct the errors: “He didn’t went to school.” / “Did she played football?”
