Relative Clauses: Defining and Non-Defining

Relative clauses give extra information about a noun. Defining relative clauses: essential to identify the noun. No commas. Can use ‘that’ instead of who/which. Ex: The book that I read was interesting. Non-defining relative clauses: extra information, not essential. Use commas. Cannot use ‘that’. Ex: My brother, who lives in London, is a doctor. Relative pronouns: who (people), which (things), that (people/things in defining), whose (possession), where (places), when (times).
