Literary Devices: Metaphor, Simile, Personification, Hyperbole
Literary devices are techniques writers use to create special effects and enrich their writing. Understanding them is essential for analyzing literature.
1. Simile (تشبيه)
A comparison between two unlike things using “like” or “as”.
Examples: “Her eyes shone like stars.” “He is as brave as a lion.”
2. Metaphor (استعارة)
A direct comparison between two unlike things without using “like” or “as”. It states that one thing IS another.
Examples: “Life is a journey.” “Time is a thief.” “The world is a stage.” Metaphor is stronger than simile because it creates a more direct identification.
3. Personification (تشخيص)
Giving human qualities to non-human things or abstract ideas.
Examples: “The wind whispered through the trees.” “The sun smiled down on us.” “Death knocked at the door.” “Fear grabbed my heart.”
4. Hyperbole (مبالغة)
An extreme exaggeration for emphasis or effect, not meant to be taken literally.
Examples: “I’ve told you a million times.” “I’m so hungry I could eat a horse.” “He runs faster than the wind.”
