Prepositions of Movement in English

Prepositions of movement describe the direction or path of movement. They help explain how something or someone moves from one place to another.

Common Prepositions of Movement

Preposition	Meaning	Example
To	Direction towards a place	She went to school.
Into	Entering a space	He walked into the room.
Onto	Moving to a surface	The cat jumped onto the table.
Across	From one side to another	He swam across the river.
Through	From inside to outside	She walked through the tunnel.
Along	Following a line	They walked along the beach.
Around	In a circle or surrounding	We drove around the city.
Towards	In the direction of	He ran towards the exit.
Up / Down	Upward / downward movement	He climbed up the ladder.
Over	Above and across	The plane flew over the mountains.
Under	Below something	The dog crawled under the fence.
