Definite and Indefinite Articles: A, An, The, Zero Article
Articles are among the most confusing aspects of English grammar for Arabic speakers. This lesson explains when to use each article.
The Indefinite Article: A / An
Used before singular countable nouns when mentioning something for the first time or referring to one example of a group.
- “A” before consonant sounds: a book, a university, a European
- “An” before vowel sounds: an apple, an hour, an honest man
Examples: “I saw a dog.” “She is a teacher.” “He is an engineer.”
The Definite Article: The
Used when the noun is specific or known to both speaker and listener.
- Something mentioned before: “I saw a dog. The dog was black.”
- Unique things: the sun, the moon, the Earth
- Superlatives: the best, the most important
- Ordinal numbers: the first, the second
- Musical instruments: play the piano
- Countries with “of” or plural names: the United States, the United Kingdom
Zero Article (No article)
- Plural and uncountable nouns in general: “Dogs are loyal animals.” “Water is essential.”
- Proper names: “John lives in London.”
- Meals: “I had breakfast.”
- Sports: “Play football.”
- Subjects: “She studies mathematics.”
