Correlative Conjunctions: Both…and, Either…or, Neither…nor
Correlative conjunctions are pairs of words that connect two balanced parts of a sentence. They help express relationships between ideas.
Both…and
Used to indicate two things are true or included. The verb is always plural.
Examples: “Both John and Mary are coming.” “She speaks both English and French.” “Both the teacher and the students were happy.”
Either…or
Used to present a choice between two options. The verb agrees with the subject closest to it.
Examples: “Either you apologize or I will leave.” “Either the manager or his assistants are responsible.” “You can either study now or fail the exam.”
Neither…nor
Used to negate both options. The verb agrees with the subject closest to it.
Examples: “Neither John nor his friends were invited.” “She neither called nor wrote.” “Neither the teacher nor the students knew the answer.”
Rule for Subject-Verb Agreement
With “either…or” and “neither…nor”, the verb agrees with the subject closest to it:
- “Either the students or the teacher is wrong.” (verb agrees with “teacher”)
- “Either the teacher or the students are wrong.” (verb agrees with “students”)
Not only…but also
Used to add emphasis to the second element. “Not only did she win the race, but she also broke the record.”
