Grammar: Question Formation
Yes/No Questions
Formed by inverting the subject and the auxiliary verb.
- He is a teacher. -> Is he a teacher?
- They can swim. -> Can they swim?
- She works hard. -> Does she work hard? (with do/does/did)
- They went home. -> Did they go home?
Wh-Questions
Use question words: What, Where, When, Why, Who, Which, How, How many, How much.
- What is your name?
- Where do you live?
- When did you arrive?
- Why are you late?
- Who is your teacher?
- Which book do you prefer?
- How do you go to school?
- How many brothers do you have?
- How much does it cost?
Subject vs Object Questions
- Subject question: Who called you? (Who is the subject, no auxiliary)
- Object question: Who did you call? (Who is the object, auxiliary needed)
Exercises
- Make questions: She lives in Algiers. (Where?)
- Ask about the subject: Someone broke the window. (Who?)
- Form yes/no questions: They have finished their work.
