Conditionals: Type 0 and Type 1

Conditional sentences are used to talk about situations that depend on a condition. In this lesson, we will study Type 0 and Type 1 conditionals.

Type 0 Conditional (General Truth)

Form: If + present simple, present simple.

Use: We use Type 0 to talk about general truths, facts, and habits. The result always happens when the condition is met.

Examples:
– If you heat ice, it melts.
– If it rains, the grass gets wet.
– If I wake up late, I miss the bus.

Type 1 Conditional (Real/Probable Future)

Form: If + present simple, will + base verb (future simple).

Use: We use Type 1 to talk about possible or probable situations in the future. The condition is realistic and likely to happen.

Examples:
– If you study hard, you will pass the exam.
– If it rains tomorrow, we will stay home.
– She will be happy if she gets the job.

Important Notes

• In Type 1, we can also use: may, might, can, should, or must instead of will. Example: If you finish your homework, you can go out.
• The if-clause can come at the beginning or end of the sentence. When it comes at the beginning, use a comma after it.
• We never use “will” in the if-clause. (Wrong: If you will study → Correct: If you study)
