Understanding Poetry: Rhyme, Rhythm and Imagery
Poetry uses special techniques to express feelings and ideas.
Rhyme
Words with same ending sound. Examples: bright/light, play/day.
Types: End rhyme, Internal rhyme, Perfect rhyme (cat/hat), Near rhyme (dome/home).
Rhythm
The pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables. Iambic rhythm: unstressed + stressed.
Shakespeare: “Shall I / comPARE / thee TO / a SUM / -mer’s DAY?”
Imagery
Language that appeals to senses: Visual (“golden sun”), Auditory (“whispering wind”), Olfactory (“scent of roses”), Tactile (“rough bark”).
Example
“The fog comes on little cat feet.” (Carl Sandburg) – Imagery: fog as cat. Mood: quiet.
Exercise
- Find rhyme scheme in: “I saw a ship a-sailing / A-sailing on the sea / Its masts were made of silver / Its sails of silk so free.”
- Write two lines with end rhyme.
