Wish and If Only: Expressing Wishes and Regrets
Wish + past simple (present wishes)
Express a wish about the present that is not true.
“I wish I spoke English fluently.” (But I don’t.)
“I wish I had more time.” (But I don’t.)
Wish + past perfect (past regrets)
Express regret about something that happened or didn’t happen.
“I wish I had studied harder.” (But I didn’t.)
“I wish I hadn’t said that.” (But I did.)
Wish + would (future wishes / complaints)
Express a wish for someone to change their behavior.
“I wish you would stop smoking.”
“I wish it would stop raining.”
If only
More emphatic than “wish”:
“If only I were younger!” / “If only I had listened!”
Exercise
