Third Conditional: Unreal Past

We use the third conditional to talk about unreal situations in the past – things that didn’t happen.

Form

If + past perfect, would have + past participle

“If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.” (But I didn’t study, so I failed.)

Uses

• Regret: If I had known, I would have come earlier.
• Imaginary past: If she had taken the offer, she would have been rich.
• Criticism: If you had listened, you wouldn’t have made mistakes.

Other modal forms

Could have: “If I had saved money, I could have bought a car.”

Might have: “If he had trained harder, he might have won.”

Exercise
