There is / There are

We use “there is” and “there are” to say that something exists.

Affirmative

There is + singular noun: “There is a book on the table.”

There are + plural noun: “There are two cats in the garden.”

Negative

There isn’t + singular noun: “There isn’t a pen in my bag.”

There aren’t + plural noun: “There aren’t any students in the class.”

Questions

Is there + singular: “Is there a bank near here?”

Are there + plural: “Are there any shops in this street?”

Short answers

Yes, there is. / No, there isn’t. / Yes, there are. / No, there aren’t.

Some and any

Affirmative: some (There are some apples.)

Negative: any (There aren’t any apples.)

Questions: any (Are there any apples?)
