Tag Questions

Tag questions are short questions added at the end of a sentence to confirm information.

Form

Affirmative sentence + negative tag: “You’re a student, aren’t you?”

Negative sentence + affirmative tag: “You aren’t tired, are you?”

Rules

• Use the same auxiliary verb as in the main sentence.
• If no auxiliary, use do/does (present) or did (past).
• Pronoun must match the subject.

Examples

• She likes coffee, doesn’t she?
• He doesn’t smoke, does he?
• They went to Paris, didn’t they?
• You can swim, can’t you?
• Let’s go, shall we?
• I’m right, aren’t I?
