Second Conditional: Unreal Situations

We use the second conditional to talk about imaginary or impossible situations in the present or future.

Form

If + past simple, would + base verb

“If I had a million dollars, I would travel the world.” (But I don’t have it.)

Uses

• Imaginary situations: If I were you, I would study harder.
• Impossible dreams: If I could fly, I would visit every country.
• Advice: If I were in your position, I would accept the offer.

Were for all subjects

In second conditional, “were” is used for all subjects (formal): “If I were you…” / “If she were here…”

Informally, “was” can be used: “If I was rich…”

Exercise

1. If I ___ (be) you, I ___ (apologise).
2. If she ___ (have) more time, she ___ (learn) piano.
3. If we ___ (live) near the beach, we ___ (swim) every day.
